The Life of Jari

the Story so Far...

I am not too sure why anyone would be interested in knowing who I am. You probably clicked on the "my info" button by mistake. You probably meant to click on the button labeled "xxx links!!!" but too bad! you're here now.

There's a picture that should be loading right above this paragraph. It could take some time.

My Pseudonyms

I find that I am frequently being asked to explain my pseudonyms and my online identities. so for the sake of those who are interested I'll explain them here.

Hecatoncheires:

I use this identity primarily for ICQ and for online gaming. It comes from Greek Mythology. The Hecatoncheires were a race of one hundred handed giants who sided with the gods when they rose up against the Titans. According to legend this war between the Titans and the gods (the Titanomachy) was at a standstill until Zeus enlisted the aid of the three Hecatoncheires. By hurling 100 spears, boulders and lightning bolts at a time the Hecatoncheires beat the titans into submission. Zeus then assigned the Hecatoncheires to the task of guarding the Titans in their prison in Tarturus

Ozymandias:

An older pseudonym. I occasionally still use it when online. However, I use it less now as I have found that there are other people who use it. Sadly I also learned that the name "EwOkdOoD_gEts_Da_BoOty!!" was already taken.

The name itself was the Greek name for Ramses II who ruled Egypt in the 12th century BCE. He is reputed to have erected huge statues of himself, and was thus considered to be quite vain.

The name "Ozymandias" was introduced into modern literature by the poem of the same name by Percy Bysshe Shelley which goes:

I met a traveler from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert . . . Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed:
And on the pedestal these words appear:
"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings: Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

Jari:

This one stems from High school. apparently "Riel" sounded too french, so I was given a less french sounding name.

There is an amusing story invloving that name and Hecla Island, but I forget how it goes.

More Stuff

I still call Winnipeg my home, but I am currently doing my masters degree in archaeology at the University of Saskatchewan, in Saskatoon.

Saskatoon and Winnipeg are in fact very similar with many interchangeable parts. I suspect that you could physically transplant the suburbs from one city into another and nobody would be able to tell the difference.

The thing I miss the most about Winnipeg is the "Second Cup" franchise of coffee shops. Oh, they have coffee shops here too, but it's just not the same. The Second Cup was a rendez-vous point for meeting old friends, late night conversations, staging military coups.. .oh, wait! ignore that last one.

Anyway the point is...well I don't know what the point is. I'm just procrastinating from doing my paper.

wait there's more!

I am not really much of a computer geek, I just put up this web site to learn HTML (which was deceptively easy. one wonders why anyone would pay somebody else to design them a website...other than the fact that they have can't be bothered) and to see if it could be done.

I apologize if these pages don't quite fit your screen and you have to scroll around a lot. I created them on a 17" screen, so anything smaller and you might see a scroll bar on the bottom of the screen.

Also, upon examining the weekly traffic report for this site, I've noticed that some people are accessing (or trying to access) this page with some pretty weird stuff. I got one guy trying to navigate it with Internet Explorer 2.0 , which I believe pre-dates Windows 95 (and also the Shroud of Turin).

Somebody else is accessing this site with a browser called "Scooter v1.0". I don't even know what that is. Maybe it's a Mac thing. you guys will have to let me know how this page turns out (provided you can even read this page!).

Also here's a hint to help you view this page at an acceptable resolution.
